Throughout his long and productive career, Michael Gielen, now more than 80 years old, has the well-earned reputation as one of the greatest interpreters and advocates of contemporary music. This specialization has not in any way prevented him from delivering some of the most exciting performances of the standard repertoire. Gielen’s distinctive, intellectually rigorous approach has been well-documented in the recent, award-winning, critically acclaimed SWR music/hänssler CLASSIC recordings of such works as Schoenberg's hyper-romantic "Gurrelieder," the choral works of Stravinsky and Bartók’s greatest orchestral works. This new recording from Maestro Gielen is certain to generate considerable interest – there are no other recordings of Gielen performing Schumann in the catalogue – and upon hearing these interpretations – vivacious, mercurial, devoid of sentimentality – one is at a loss to why it has taken so long to get Gielen to record Schumann!
